The world's most popular hybrid took home Decisive Magazine's Urban Green Vehicle of the Year award. This Prius is like none other; it can run on strictly electricity for 15 miles. Charging the car at a max of three hours using a standard 120 volt outlet provides a driving range equivalent of 87 miles per gallon. The expected overall EPA rating for the Prius will be 49 mpg. Toyota has sold over 1 million Priuses in the U.S. since it first debuted 10 years ago.

Intel, TMC to Start Joint Research on Next-Generation In-Vehicle Multimedia Systems

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) signed a memorandum of understanding today with Intel Corporation to begin joint research on next-generation in-vehicle multimedia systems* that would replace current navigation systems.

The joint research with Intel, experienced in information communication technologies, will target appropriate methods of providing information to drivers through in-vehicle systems, as well as information technologies that would enable seamless communication between on-board information systems and nearby information systems.

The amount of information exchanged between cars and drivers is expected to increase due to expanding demand for traffic information, destination searches, radar cruise control and other driving support functions. In response, Toyota and Intel will conduct research on vehicle-driver interfaces that do not interfere with driving.

With Wi-Fi and other various data transmission methods constantly improving, Toyota and Intel will research communication technologies to improve connectivity between cars and widely used information equipment, such as smartphones.

Furthermore, the two companies will research connectivity technologies and effective ways to seamlessly integrate cars with other aspects of people’s lives, including homes.

*In-vehicle systems that provide the user with a multitude of information. Beginning with in-vehicle radio and evolving to current-generation navigation systems, integration with smartphones, home appliances and other energy management systems is expected to be the next stage of evolution for the technology

Toyota Launches Contest for Teens to Stay Safe Behind the Wheel

Toyota and Discovery Education have announced a contest to encourage teenagers to drive safely. The contest has students (grades 9-12) create 2-minute videos and post them to the Toyota Teen Driver Facebook page to be voted on in February. The top prize is $20,000 with the following nine finalists receiving $1,500 each. The program will try to get teens to understand the dangers of the road, and how they can make driving a safer experience for all.

2011 SEMA Show: Oakley Surf Tacoma

The 2011 SEMA Show will be the scene for the debut of the Oakley Surf Tacoma. From the coast of Baja to the cold water of Santa Cruz, Calif., the Oakley Surf Tacoma has the ability to live at the beach and go anywhere in search of mega waves. Australian surfing pro Tom Whitaker will be on hand to talk about the Oakley Surf Tacoma at a press conference in the Toyota exhibit at the SEMA Show on Nov. 1at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

Built using a rugged Toyota Tacoma 4x4 pickup equipped with a V6 engine and TRD supercharger that generates 304 horsepower, the truck was customized by Smithbuilt to be a Surfing Big Wave Assault Machine. Additional performance modifications include a Flowmaster stainless steel exhaust, an Icon stage 3 lift kit, Billet top A arms, new leaf springs for added height, a new front coilover system, and Walker Evans 17 x 8 bead lock wheels with a flat black finish mounted to BF Goodrich 285/75-17 all-terrain tires.

Inside modifications include Wet Okole Hawaii custom embroidered seat covers, Topstitch interior modifications on the door panels, head liner and carpet kit throughout, a Kicker sound system and an Oakley icon.

This unique Toyota Tacoma is a surfer’s dream as it is equipped with a purpose-built roof racking system for heavy hauling and can be accessed with ease for surf bag stowage and multiple board storage. The truck bed system, which has a lot of storage for wet suits and other equipment, also comes with an ice chest and barbeque grill.   Meals and cold drinks can be enjoyed under a shade system that is equipped in the back of the roof rack system. Living comfort is also achieved with and integrated shower system. Illumination is supplemented with Vision X lighting in the bed and front driving lights.

After SEMA, the Oakley Surf Tacoma will follow the waves and appear at all Oakley surf competitions. Surf’s up!

Toyota to Unveil Tacoma TRD T|X Baja Series in Las Vegas

Toyota will debut the most rugged Tacoma yet. The unveiling will take place in Las Vegas at the annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). The limited edition pickup is called the Tacoma TRD|X Baja Series. “The limited-edition TRD T|X Baja Series adds another chapter to Toyota’s truck legacy by offering a new level of capability for off-road enthusiasts,” said Bob Carter, VP and GM of Toyota Division.

New Sequoia Additions on 2012 Models Help with Safety

Toyota Venza Gets Three-Grade Model Line For 2012

While Toyota’s lineup continues to offer an assortment of crossovers and SUVs, the Venza still delivers a unique combination of sportiness and versatility. For 2012, the Venza will also get a new three-model grade line to give customers even more to choose from.

Buyers will be able to get the 2012 Toyota Venza in either LE, XLE, or Limited grades. The LE and XLE models are available with all powertrain combinations including four-cylinder, V6, front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). The range-topping Venza Limited comes with the V6 engine only, but offers the choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations.

What isn’t changing is the Venza’s fresh, modern design, which was the creation of Toyota’s Calty Design studios in Newport Beach, Calif., mad Ann Arbor, Mich. With the same footprint as a midsize sedan, it offers loads of interior space for passengers, while still offering plenty of maneuverability. Additionally, buyers will also appreciate the Venza’s SUV attributes, such as cargo space, towing capability and available all-wheel drive traction.

Powering the base 2012 Venza is a 182 horsepower 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, which is rated at 27 mpg highway for the FWD model. A powerful 3.5-liter 268 horsepower V6 is also available. The latter delivers 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

Toyota Introduces The 2012 Prius Plug-In Hybrid

At the annual Green Drive Expo, Toyota showcased one of the newest additions to the Prius hybrid family, the Prius plug-in. This new model will give customers more options when it comes to fuel-efficient transportation.

The Prius plug-in will join the popular third-generation Prius Liftback and the new Prius v. What sets the plug-in model apart will be its incredible fuel economy, a manufacturer-estimated 87 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in combined driving and 49 MPG in hybrid mode.

“We call it the car with no compromises,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division Group Vice President and General Manager, at the expo. “When the EV power runs out, the proven Prius Hybrid Synergy Drive System takes over, giving the driver the same fantastic Prius out on the road today. It a better overall package, with more passenger convenience, comfort and utility than other plug-ins or EVs on the market today.”

The 2012 Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid will allow true EV operation and performance for up to 15 miles at speeds up to 62 mph, along with quick home charging using a standard AC outlet and 15-amp dedicated circuit. The vehicle also offers the same five-passenger seating and luggage space as the standard Prius model.

Toyota estimates that a full charge using an external AC outlet will take approximately 2.5 to 3.0 hours using a 120v household outlet, or 1.5 hours using a 240v outlet. The included 120v charging cable connects to the charging port inlet which is incorporated into the right-rear fender.

In addition to its innovative powertrain, the new Prius Plug-In boasts a wide range of comfort and convenience features, not to mention Toyota’s renowned infotainment system.

“The Plug-in will also launch our newest telematics applications for Entune, specifically designed for Plug-in Hybrid needs,” added Carter. “We’ll have more details to share with you in the future, but the new applications will include Charge Management, Remote Air Conditioning System, Charging Station Map, Vehicle Finder and Eco Dashboard, all available from the owner’s smart phone.”

The Prius Plug-in will go on sale next March.

2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid Boasts Best-In-Class Fuel Efficiency

Wearing the same sophisticated and 100 percent new sheet metal as the gas-only model, the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid sets a fresh benchmark for fuel-economy among mid-size hybrid sedans, delivering an EPA estimated 43 mpg city/39 mpg highway/41 mpg. That’s an improvement of more than 30 percent as compared to the 2011 model—and it now tops the performance of the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and Kia Optima Hybrid as well.

It’s the result of both significant weight reduction and aerodynamic improvements, along with a number of important upgrades to Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system. Among them: A new, more powerful 2.5-liter gas engine with intelligent variable valve timing and a new water-cooled exhaust gas recirculation system that also helps to reduce emissions. Thanks to these changes and more, the Camry Hybrid not only can achieve the already-mentioned EPA numbers, but it also provides drivers with 200 combined horsepower. Other upgrades for the new model year include:

Improved sound insulation in the engine compartment
More linear power delivery
Enhanced efficiency measures for maintaining power to vehicle systems when the engine is off
Newly optimized regenerative braking
A more compact battery for extra trunk room
Larger, 17-inch low-rolling-resistance tires
A longer (1.6 miles) all-electric driving range at speeds under 25 mph

But even with this comprehensive overhaul of the Camry Hybrid, Toyota has sliced a full $1,150 from its MSRP, which is now just $25,900—that’s $2,700 lower than the base MSRP of the Ford Fusion Hybrid.

The 2012 Camry Hybrid is slated to reach Toyota Place in October.

Toyota FT-86 II Concept Is Shown Once More

Toyota has once again decided to show the sumptuous FT-86 II Concept, this time at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Although the sports car can been shown at five different shows, it remains technically a concept.

According to Toyota, the car on display in Frankfurt is “lighter, faster and sportier” than the concept cars that came before it, but aside from the new orange paint job, the only noticeable difference are a pair of red Brembo brake calipers behind those alloy wheels.

Although Toyota enthusiasts would undoubtedly like to see a production version they can actually drive, the FT-86 II Concept is nevertheless a stunning vehicle. While we wait patiently for Toyota to show a production model, check out the teaser video the automaker put together.

2012 Toyota Yaris To Showcase Sporty SE Model

Offering a strong combination of fun and functionality, the 2012 Toyota Yaris lineup is slated to debut this fall with bold new styling, outstanding safety features and improved fuel economy of up to 38 mpg highway—all at an MSRP that starts at just $14,115.

But the Yaris is packed with features despite that high-value price, including more than $1,000 worth of additional content that wasn’t on the 2011 base model. All grades of the 2012 Yaris boast standard equipment like electric power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, power door locks, air conditioning, halogen headlamps, an AM/FM/CD/USB sound system and nine airbags. Also standard: Significantly more cargo room. Thanks to its new, slightly larger exterior proportions, the interior of the 2012 Yaris delivers 64 percent more cargo volume in its three-door configuration and 68 percent more as a five-door.

And both are powered by a peppy 1.5-liter I4 that makes 106 hp and 103 lb.-ft. of torque across a surprisingly wide power band. Drivers will be able to choose from either an upgraded four-speed electronically controlled electronic transmission (available on all models) or a slick-shifting five-speed manual (available on the L and SE models). Toyota engineers also worked to improve driving dynamics for Yaris owners by incorporating a new suspension with MacPherson struts in the front and a torsion-beam setup in the rear, and also outfitting the car with a thicker front stabilizer bar.

For drivers who want a more athletic experience, the Yaris SE adds:

The refreshed Tacoma will carry a base price of $16,875, which puts it just $510 higher than the 2011 Tacoma. For that sum, buyers can get a Regular Cab 4×2 equipped with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission.

A V6-powered Tacoma will set buyers back as little as $22,760 with the five-speed automatic transmission. For those that demand four-wheel drive, a four cylinder (Regular Cab, five-speed manual) model will cost $20,725.

For 2012, the Tacoma will top out at $27,835, which gets you the V6-powered Long Bed Double Cab with a five-speed automatic transmission.

The 2012 Toyota Tacoma goes on sale at Toyota Place this month.

2012 Toyota Tacoma Debuts Restyled Exterior, Interior and New Entune Multimedia

The Toyota Tacoma, still the best-selling compact pickup truck in the U.S. market by a wide margin, offers a restyled exterior look and a redesigned, upgraded interior in all models for 2012. New changes add comfort, usability and audio/infotainment performance.

Toyota sold more than 106,000 Tacoma models for 2010, outselling its nearest competitor by nearly two-to-one. For 2012, Tacoma shows a fresh face with a redesigned hood, grille, headlamps and front bumper, among other changes. Inside, customers will find a new center-instrument panel design with a revised gauge cluster, along with a new steering wheel. A redesigned center stack adds new air conditioner/heater controls and power point locations.

The 2012 Tacoma interior also gets a new look with a black high-contrast center console, switch plate covers, dash and upper door trim, while the SR5 grade features a new seat fabric design. With owners using their trucks for hard work and hard play, Tacoma offers new heavy-duty all-weather flooring in the 2012 Tacoma Access and Double Cab models, while the more specialized TRD Sport and Off-Road models offer new water-resistant fabric protection seats. The TRD Sport Package adds side mirrors with turn-signal lamps for 2012, as well as available chrome-clad 18-inch wheels.

Details that add up to more comfort and function include a larger, higher-resolution display for the available back-up camera (3.3-inch vs. 2.4-inch), a new temperature gauge, available rear-view mirror with compass and HomeLink, vanity lamps added to sun visors, an additional overhead storage compartment and, on Access Cab models, a new rear-console storage box. All models now feature two front-deck “D” rings for added versatility.

The 2012 Tacoma is available in a wide variety of configurations and models, and this focus on customer choice has been instrumental in the vehicle’s continued market leadership. Many models offer a choice between four-cylinder and V6 engines, and 2WD and 4WD drivetrains.

New Audio Choices for 2012

The DoubleCab V6 models offer a more advanced display audio system with today’s most in-demand connectivity features. Performance
The 2012 Tacoma line offers two engines: a 2.7-liter Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) four-cylinder that produces 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft. of torque, and a 4.0-liter DOHC V6 that provides 236 horsepower with 266 lb-ft. of torque. In both engines, variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) provides strong low-end and mid-range torque.

An Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence helps optimize performance and fuel economy. The V6 can be teamed with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. Four-cylinder models offer a choice between a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission. When equipped with a V6 Tow Package, Access Cab models boast a maximum tow capacity of up to 6,500 pounds.

X-Runner: A Unique Sport Truck
The Tacoma X-Runner performance truck, unique in the entire compact truck category, returns for 2012 and features the 4.0-liter V6 engine with a specially tuned chassis. Featuring a six-speed manual transmission, the X-Runner can accelerate from 0-to-60 mph in less than seven seconds. Just as impressive, the Tacoma X-Runner can achieve lateral acceleration in excess of 0.9-g – comparable to many performance cars. The X-Runner's Access Cab design incorporates a full body kit, a hood scoop and integrated fog lamps. The color-keyed monochromatic exterior comes in three colors – Barcelona Red, Black Sand Pearl and Nautica Blue Metallic, which is new for 2012.

To take performance even higher, TRD offers a 4.0-liter V6 supercharger kit capable of generating 304 horsepower and 334 lbs.-ft. of torque also available for other Tacoma V6 models). The design uses Eaton Roots-type rotating components in a one-piece supercharger plenum/manifold casting. The supercharger is fully warranted for up to five years or 60,000 miles or the remainder of the powertrain warranty at the time of installation when installed by a Toyota dealer.

T|X Packages for the Hardcore Pickup Fan
The T|X and T|X Pro Packages, available in conjunction with the TRD Off-Road Package, add a concept-truck look to the Tacoma V6 Access Cab or V6 Double Cab PreRunner and 4x4 models. The T|X Package gives the Tacoma a menacing look and additional sportiness with TRD 16-inch black alloy bead-lock wheels and 265/70R16 BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires. Black tube-side steps, a stainless steel exhaust tip and unique exterior graphics give the T|X the aesthetics of a custom truck.

The T|X Pro is the performance-oriented package by also including a TRD cat-back performance exhaust system that gives the V6 a throatier sound and a bit more power. The T|X and T|X Pro Packages offer a strong value compared to offering the contents as separate accessories, especially considering that they are covered under Toyota’s standard three year/36,000-mile comprehensive vehicle limited warranty and can be financed.

The TRD Off-Road Package underlying both T|X editions provides a carefully tuned balance of off-road performance and on-road handling. Chassis modifications include an electronic locking rear differential, progressive-rate front springs, specially tuned Bilstein shock absorbers, a 28-mm front stabilizer bar and BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires. Fog lamps top off the package for a tough, sporty appearance. Both the TRD Off-Road Package and TRD Sport Package have a 400W/115V powerpoint in the bed; sport seats with adjustable lumbar support and unique fabric, and an overhead console with a compass and outside temperature display. Double Cab and Access Cab models also offer a back-up monitor system.

Safety
Standard on all Tacoma models is the Toyota Star Safety System™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop brake override technology. Every Tacoma has standard three-point seatbelts for all seating positions, front seat-mounted side airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags (including a cutoff switch), and a front advanced dual-stage airbag system. A front passenger cutoff switch is standard on Access Cab models.

All Access Cab and Double Cab models feature standard active headrests for the front seats, which move up and forward almost instantly in the event of certain rear-end collisions to help reduce the distance between the occupant's head and the headrest.

Capability, Handling and Ride
The TRD Off-Road Package available for 4x4 V6 automatic models includes Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC). HAC operates by independently controlling the brakes at each wheel as needed to help prevent the vehicle from rolling backward or slipping sideways during a transition from a stopped position to climbing a grade. An Automatic Limited-slip Differential (Auto-LSD), which uses brake intervention to help reduce tire slippage at the rear wheels, is standard on all Tacoma models.

DAC uses engine braking to regulate downhill speed and independently control the brakes at each wheel to help improve directional control. DAC automatically de-activates if the driver depresses the brake or accelerator pedals, presses the DAC button, or shifts into neutral. TRD Off-Road Packages feature a locking rear differential that can be activated by a switch in the cab. An electronic rear differential is available on 4x4 models and the PreRunner.

Comfort and Convenience
The well-equipped 4x2 Regular Cab model features standard air conditioning; a full-size spare tire; AM/FM CD four-speaker sound system; tachometer; digital clock; two instrument panel powerpoints with a lighter; dome lamp; and rear mudguards. Regular Cab 4x4 models with the automatic transmission feature standard bucket seats. Tacoma Access Cab and Double Cab models add more standard features, including power windows and door locks, bucket seats and a center console. In Double Cab models, power mirrors and driver seat adjustable lumbar support are also standard.

Options
For both Access and Double Cab models, the available option combinations are built on five core packages. The SR5 Package bundles styling and comfort features, including color-keyed overfenders and front bumper, chrome grille surround and chrome rear bumper, intermittent wipers and upgraded interior features and trim, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel and automatic transmission shift lever.

The TRD Sport Package is road-focused and features its own specific suspension tuning and lower-profile 265/65 R17 tires on 17-inch alloy wheels. This package also gives Tacoma a sporty look with fog lamps, hood scoop, TRD graphics and color-keyed rear bumper, mirrors, grille surround and door handles.

The available dealer-installed TRD Big Brake system was developed by Toyota Technical Center and TRD engineers. Engineered to provide effective braking performance under sustained heavy use, the Big Brake system dramatically improves pedal feel. The system uses 13 x 1.25-inch semi-floating vented rotors with directional internal fins, forged aluminum four-piston fixed calipers, larger pads with high coefficient-of-friction material and braided steel lines.

Exterior Design
The 2012 Tacoma has a new look from the A-pillar forward, with new front grilles on all grades. In addition to a new hood, Tacoma also receives new headlamps, new upper and lower bumper areas, including an updated fog lamp housing.

Tacoma configurations are based on three cab types: Regular Cab, Access Cab, and the four-door Double Cab. The rear doors on Access Cab models open to 80 degrees to give passengers easy ingress and egress. Bold overfenders distinguish PreRunner and 4x4 models. PreRunner models combine the 4x2 drivetrain with the 4x4's raised riding stance and styling. Double Cab models offer a roof rack system with crossbars that deploy from the roof rails.

Tacoma Regular Cab models are built on a 109.6-inch wheelbase; 4x2 Access Cab models (including PreRunner and 4x4) ride on a 127.4-inch wheelbase. The Tacoma Double Cab with the standard five-foot bed shares the 127.4-inch wheelbase, while the Double Cab long-bed models use a 140.6-inch wheelbase.

The Tacoma Regular Cab and Access Cab models feature a 73.5-inch-long bed. The Double Cab is available with a choice of a 60.3-inch bed or the 73.5-inch bed. The Tacoma's composite inner bed is made from a sheet-molded composite (SMC) deck and tough and durable walls that are 10 percent lighter than steel. The bed deck features two-tier loading and an integrated deck-rail utility with four standard adjustable tie-down cleats. The rails are compatible with Genuine Toyota Accessories, including cargo bed cross bars, a fork-mount bike rack, and diamond-plate storage boxes. An available 115V/400W powerpoint further extends the bed's utility.

Interior Design
A redesigned instrument gauge panel lends a sporty look in all models for 2012. The center console (standard on Access Cab and Double Cab models) flows into the instrument panel for a unified appearance. The console integrates three cupholders, two of which can accommodate extra-large containers.

Tacoma’s interior provides durability and comfort with high-grade fabric and generous standard equipment. Sound absorption material in the headliner and behind the rear seats, along with insulating carpeting, help to provide a quiet cabin. All Tacoma models provide dual bottle holders in driver's- and passenger's-side doors. Audio controls are mounted high for easy access.

Higher-grade models feature fabric-covered sun visors and an overhead console with map lights, as well as compartments for sunglasses and a garage door opener. Interior storage is maximized in Access Cab models with fold up rear seats and underseat storage. Double Cab models feature 60/40 split rear seats with adjustable headrests and under-seat storage.

Limited Warranty
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. The Camry will also come standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Toyota Confirms Timing For Prius c, Other Electrified Vehicles

Even as it worked to recover from this spring’s disasters in Japan, Toyota continued its campaign to ready a new wave of high-efficiency electrified vehicles for the marketplace—and those efforts appear to have paid off. Akio Toyoda, president of the Toyota Motor Corporation, recently visited this country to speak at this year’s national Toyota dealer meeting, and he told attendees that the launches of the Prius c, Prius plug-in hybrid, RAV4 electric vehicle and Scion iQ electric vehicle all remain on schedule, with no delays expected.

After the October debut of the all-new Prius v, offering 42 mpg combined and more cargo room than many of today’s small crossovers, Toyota will then introduce its new vehicles as follows:

Prius c—Designed specifically to bring hybrid driving to an urban environment, the compact Prius c is expected to be the most fuel-efficient plugless hybrid vehicle on the market when it goes on sale here in the spring of 2012.

Prius Plug-in Hybrid—Offering about 13 miles of all-electric driving range, as well as hundreds of miles of more driving with the same EPA ratings as the standard Prius, the plug-in model is still scheduled for introduction in the first half of 2012.

Toyota RAV4 EV—This all-electric version of the popular RAV4 crossover, leveraging the same kind of technology that powers the Tesla Roadster, remains on target to hit its launch date late in 2012.

Scion iQ EV—Another urban-friendly vehicle, the fully electrified model of Scion’s eye-catching new iQ city car also continues to be on schedule for its initially projected introduction late next year, with the ability to travel 50-60 miles on a single charge.

Toyota Prius V To Feature JBL GreenEdge Audio

When the all-new Toyota Prius v debuts this fall, it will mark a significant efficiency breakthrough for the industry, and not just because it will boast more cargo room than a Chevy Equinox while still achieving EPA marks of 44 mpg city/40 mpg highway/42 mpg combined. The newest member of the Prius family also will offer a revolutionary audio setup that—much like the vehicle itself—delivers both increased performance and decreased power consumption. This new JBL GreenEdge sound system, from global audio leader Harman, leverages technologies first introduced in the Lexus LFA supercar and will be a premium option on the 2012 Prius v.

“GreenEdge-enabled HARMAN audio systems provide strong benefits, ranging from reduced system weight to reduced energy consumption—which can translate into enhanced fuel efficiency or extended EV range—plus higher sound pressure levels and greater dynamic response for superior in-car audio enjoyment,” said Sachin Lawande, HARMAN’s chief technology officer and co-president of the company’s automotive business.

To achieve this, the GreenEdge system relies on three key elements:

High-voltage amplification reduces heat in the system’s electrical components so that it can supply higher voltages to the amplifier while decreasing overall energy consumption. As a result, at maximum volume, the system uses 50 percent less power than the standard Prius audio setup. And it weighs 66 percent less, too.
Eight loudspeakers showcase a high-efficiency design that enables them to produce greater output for a given amount of input power. In the Prius v, the speakers use the same amount of power normally needed for a 120-watt system and, because of their new design, actually achieve the equivalent of a 600-watt rating.
Advanced signal-processing tools continuously monitor the performance of every individual speaker to optimize the amplifier signal going to each one. Combined with the system’s specially designed speaker lenses and active equalization, this technology creates improved, refined sound coverage with lifelike dynamics and transient response.

And if you like the way that sounds, this should be music to your ears: JBL GreenEdge audio technology will soon be rolling out to future Toyota models as well.

Toyota, Ford Team Up To Create Hybrid Trucks

Hybrid vehicle leaders Toyota and Ford have just announced a new partnership that will lead to the development of advanced hybrid trucks and SUVs. Although the two automakers have worked independently on their own rear-wheel drive hybrid systems, they will collaborate in an effort to bring greater efficiency to truck and SUV customers without sacrificing capability.

Not only will Ford and Toyota collaborate on next-generation hybrid powertrain systems, but the automakers will also work to standardize telematics platform standards, helping bring more Internet-based services and useful information to consumers globally.

“This agreement brings together the capability of two global leaders in hybrid vehicles and hybrid technology to develop a better solution more quickly and affordably for our customers,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “Ford achieved a breakthrough with the Ford Fusion Hybrid, and we intend to do this again for a new group of truck and SUV buyers – customers we know very well.”

While both companies have worked tirelessly on separate rear-wheel-drive hybrid systems, Toyota and Ford were surprised to find common ground when the two began discussing this potential collaboration. Ultimately, the partnership will yield an array of benefits for consumers.

“By working together, we will be able to serve our customers with the very best affordable, advanced powertrains, delivering even better fuel economy,” said Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally. “This is the kind of collaborative effort that is required to address the big global challenges of energy independence and environmental sustainability.”

After sharing common technology and components, the automakers will each be responsible for individually integrating the system into their own vehicles. When combined with new telematics standards, future pickups and SUVs not only promise to be more efficient, but they’ll also deliver a more secure and more convenient in-car experience.

This is the definitive list to end all 100 Greatest Cars lists. You'll never have to read another list, and this list is absolutely, scientifically, precisely and transcendently correct. That is until we have a few more PBRs.

Greatness, for the reason of this list, is defined by a vehicle's direct, significant contribution to American automotive culture. That does not mean that a car had to actually have been sold in America, but that its legend changed how other cars are seen in its shadow. Some of the choices here are actually racecars.

So it's a biased list in favor of cars that enthusiasts love, but it also acknowledges those everyday cars that have shaped our lives.

Still, sales success doesn't matter here, but greatness does come in batches. So these are production vehicles. No one-offs like the Batmobile or Don "The Snake" Prudhomme's Hot Wheels Funny Car. And there are no flying cars either, unless you count the 1965 Shelby Cobra 427.

100. 1997 Acura Integra Type-R: Hand-ported heads, 8,000-rpm redline, and the best-handling front-drive chassis ever. It's still the ultimate sport compact.

All-New Toyota Yaris Is Fun, Functional, And Frugal

The all-new 2012 Toyota Yaris arrives in showrooms this fall with fresh, sporty styling and a bevy of new safety features. The latest Yaris also boasts improved fuel economy that should satisfy the demands of most subcompact car buyers.

Although Toyota retained the model’s modest exterior dimensions, the 2012 Yaris has a smartly-designed interior that delivers roominess and refinement. Buyers will also love the Yaris’ responsive driving dynamics.

Toyota Announces 2012 Prices for Yaris, Sequoia, Tundra and Sienna

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. announced manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the all-new 2012 next-generation Yaris subcompact. Also announced were MSRPs for the 2012 Tundra full-size pickup truck, Sequoia large sport utility vehicle (SUV) and Sienna van.

The Yaris liftback enters its second-generation with an all-new redesign. The new Yaris will again offer the Toyota Star Safety System as standard equipment and an array of enhancements including a new SE model with an enhanced tuned suspension. Complete details for the new Yaris will be announced in the near future.

Yaris will continue to be an excellent value with more than $1,000 of additional standard equipment. Pricing for the all-new 2012 Yaris will be comparable to a Convenience Package-equipped current generation Yaris. The base MSRP will range from $14,115 for the L grade three-door liftback with a five-speed manual transmission to $17,200 for the SE grade five-door liftback with a four-speed automatic transmission. The prices for the 2012 Yaris will go into effect with the start of production on August 31.

The 2012 Sequoia adds an extra measure of towing safety with the addition of a Trailer Sway Control system as standard equipment. In addition, a new Blind Spot Monitor is standard on the Sequoia Platinum grade. The interior of all Sequoia models will include a black upper instrumentation panel and black carpet, regardless of exterior and interior colors. One new exterior color, Sizzling Crimson Mica, replaces Cassis Pearl.

Pricing on most Sequoia models remain unchanged. The MSRP for the 2012 Sequoia ranges from $40,930 for the 4x2 SR5 with a 4.6-liter V8 to $61,805 for the 4x4 Platinum grade equipped with the 5.7-liter V8, reflecting an increase of $239, 0r 0.4 percent. Prices for the 2012 Sequoia will go into effect beginning with its start of production on August 29.

Like the Sequoia, the 2012 Tundra full-size pickup will also include a black upper instrumentation panel and black carpet, regardless of exterior and interior colors. Styled steel wheels are now standard equipment on all Tundra models. Other features that are now standard equipment include a Cold Area Package, daytime running lights and heated mirrors. A backup camera is now standard on Limited grades and Super White exterior color is available on the Limited grade.

Pricing for the 2012 Tundra ranges from $27,115 for the 4x2 Tundra Grade Double Cab V6 with a five-speed automatic transmission to $43,345 for the 4x4 CrewMax Limited with a 5.7-liter V8 and 6-speed automatic, reflecting an increase of $348, or 1.1 percent. Prices for the 2012 Tundra will go into effect beginning with start of production on September 1.

All-new in 2011 model year, the Sienna van carries over virtually unchanged. Pricing for the Sienna will range from $24,520 for the front-wheel-drive Base grade to $40,570 for the all-wheel-drive Limited, reflecting an overall increase of $174 or 0.5 percent. Prices for the 2012 Sienna will go into effect beginning with the start of production on September 6.

The MSRPs for the 2012 Yaris, Sequoia, Tundra and Sienna do not include the delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee. The DPH for the Yaris is $760, Sienna $810, and Sequoia and Tundra at $985. The DPH fee for vehicles distributed by Southeast Toyota (SET) and Gulf States Toyota (GST) may vary.

Toyota’s Crash Avoidance System Takes Control Of The Wheel

Safety is a top priority at Toyota. The automaker’s Star Safety System — a bundle of numerous safety features — is already standard on every vehicle it sells. Now, the automaker is preparing its latest safety innovation: active steering.

Some cars feature technology that applies the brakes when a danger is identified in the vehicle’s path. This technology is helpful to avoid collisions with other vehicles or even pedestrians (when it works properly), but Toyota’s active steering system goes a step further and actually steers your car away from danger.

The new system uses cameras and radar in the front of the vehicle, to detect a potential collision with a pedestrian. If it detects a pedestrian, the system will steer the car out of the way automatically, essentially overriding input from the driver.

“We must learn from accidents and keep making improvements in safety features,” said chief safety technology officer Moritaka Yoshida.

Toyota has not announced the model that’s going to receive this technology first, but emphasized it will be available to consumers soon.

While fatalities have been declining in auto accidents, deaths among pedestrians in traffic accidents haven’t gone down in Japan. Toyota’s pre-collision tech is intended to provide a new level of protection for pedestrians.

Toyota Endorses Ambitious New Fuel Economy Standards

Toyota has joined other automakers in endorsing a White House plan to raise fuel economy standards to 54.5 mpg by 2025 while reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 163 grams per mile.

“I am pleased to be in Washington today to demonstrate Toyota’s unyielding commitment to this important process. The long-term objectives of this program are very ambitious, and we intend to meet the challenge,” said Jim Lentz, President and COO of Toyota Motor Sales, USA.

Once the new standards are fully in place, they will cut carbon pollution in half compared with today’s vehicles and reduce fuel consumption by about 40 percent. The new standards are also expected to curb oil dependence and reduce oil consumption by an estimated 2.2 million barrels a day.

Lentz added, “We share the Administration’s goal of achieving major advances in clean, fuel efficient vehicles. Obama announces 54.5 mpg gas mileage standard

President Obama is announcing tough fuel-economy standards starting in the 2017 model year, requiring automakers to average 54.5 miles a gallon.

The standard is sure to force dramatic changes in cars, making them smaller, lighter and loaded with higher-tech engines such as hybrids, diesels or other fuel savers. The standard is so tough that relatively few models would meet it.

Because of the way fuel economy is calculated, window sticker labels of estimated fuel economy of individual models will be lower. Those labels will probably show values of about 40 mpg, says Roland Hwang, transportation director for the Natural Resources Defense Council. "Because of the differences between the laboratory certification test cycle and the on-road fuel efficiency, drivers can expect to see the average window fuel economy label to be about 40 mpg, compared to today's average of about 22.5 mpg," Hwang writes.

There are fears that the standard will force automakers to produce small cars that families won't want to buy -- or that cars will become too expensive:

"There is a realistic fear that the trigger for price increases will come from more than the new required technologies, and also by the automakers rationing demand through pricing in order to comply," says Jeremy Anwyl, CEO of Edmunds.com, a car-buying research website.

The new standard is the followup to the 35.5 corporate fuel average being phased in through the 2016 model year. Currently, automakers average less than 30 miles a gallon.

As tough as the new standard would be, it's considered a compromise. The administration sought an average of more than 56 miles a gallon.

As hard as it will make life for them, automakers lined up behind the proposal -- especially those known for small cars.

The negotiations allowed for some concessions to Detroit automakers as well, and Michigan's congressional delegation got behind the agreement.

"The agreement President Obama announced today will now take significant steps to increase vehicle fuel economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and at the same time will protect American jobs, promote American manufacturing of advanced-technology vehicles, and help ensure that American automakers have a level playing field to produce and sell the vehicles consumers want to buy," said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich.

To develop its rankings, the website partnered with Edmunds.com, a premier provider of online information for today’s auto shoppers, to rate vehicles based on factors like fuel efficiency, handling, safety and ability to haul both kids and cargo.

Gaining high marks in all areas was the iconic Toyota Prius—the top-selling hybrid in the world—which was named a “Best Family Car” in the Eco-Friendly category. And while it certainly helps that the Prius can achieve EPA ratings of up to 51 mpg city/48 mpg highway/50 mpg combined, Parents.com also lauded the car for conveniences like a “smart key” that can automatically unlock the vehicle even if the driver’s hands are full, a sliding armrest, and a flat cargo area that can be easily accessed using the Prius’ rear liftgate.

Winning in the Crossover category for the fifth consecutive year was the Toyota RAV4, thanks in large part to its “terrific handling” and optional third row seating that adds extra space for young passengers. And there’s plenty of cargo room as well, since Toyota mounted the RAV4’s spare on the back of the vehicle. A “potent” four-cylinder rounds out the RAV4 package, while also delivering EPA marks of 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway/24 mpg combined. (A V6 is available as an option.)

Toyota came up big in the “Big Car” segment with the all-new Sienna, the company’s popular minivan. Completely redesigned for the 2011 model year, the Sienna “glides through curves and has a sturdy feel that will make drivers feel confident,” and is packed with storage spaces. Other notable features mentioned by Parents.com include the Sienna’s standard rear-seat climate controls, “generously sized” seats and ability to seat up to eight, thanks to a unique “pop-in chair” that fits into the second row.

Toyota Expects 16,000 Prius Plug-In Sales Next Year

In 2012, Toyota expects at least 16,000 sales of the new Prius Plug-in. Toyota spokesman, John Hanson, told Bloomberg News that the new model will be a strong seller and that Toyota is prepared to deliver regardless of demand.

The Prius Plug-in will have an electric-only range of at least 13 miles and it will return about 50 miles per gallon in city and highway driving. It will also have a base price that’s less than the Chevrolet Volt and the all-electric Nissan Leaf. However, it will be priced slightly higher than the standard Prius model, which begins at $23,520.

The Toyota Prius is already the most popular hybrid in the world. In 2010, Toyota sold 140,928 Prii, and that number will likely grow significantly as new Prius models arrive. In addition to a plug-in model, the Prius lineup will also get a larger multi-purpose version later this year.

Although the Prius Plug-in won’t have an electric-only range that’s comparable to the Volt or the Leaf, it will likely be a popular choice among consumers that already have an affinity for the established nameplate.

Five Tips for Summer Car Safety

If you find your self living anywhere where it gets pretty hot in the summer, you'll want to know what locals know about summer car safety. Having the right items--and never having the wrong items--in your vehicle will make driving in the heat a much safer and enjoyable experience.

If you ever park outside during the summer months, your car will heat up quickly. Heat coming in through the windows is absorbed by the interior, and the glass acts as an insulator. The temperature in your car get up to 200 degrees, depending on the temperature outside, the kind of vehicle you have, and how long it has been in the sun.

Five Tips About Hot Cars

1. Park in the Shade 
too obvious? Walk a few extra steps if you see a tree nearby. Be aware, however, that trees mean birds, and you may have debris or bird droppings on your car when you return. If you can't park in the shade, pick the best direction. Say you're at the mall at 3 p.m. Which is the best way to park? The sun sets in the west, so you don't want to be facing west. Try to park in the direction where the sun will be shining on your rear window or passenger side for most of the time it will be parked.

2. Window Tinting/Sunshades  
Mitigate some of the effects of the sun by having your windows tinted. Arizona's laws regarding window tinting are not as strict as the window tinting laws in many other states. Basically, Arizona law says that the front side windows must allow at least 35% of light to pass through the tint. If window tinting isn't in your budget right now, then you can eliminate some of the heat by purchasing a windshield sunshade that you place on the inside of your windshield when you leave your car. This prevents the sun from beating on your dashboard and steering wheel. Dashboards don't like the sun or heat. If you don't cover them, they will fade and crack. Steering wheels, of course, get extremely hot, cause burns to the touch, and result in unsafe driving when you can't really grip the wheel. There are also removable side window screens, if you have passengers in the rear who want a little relief from the sun on long road trips.

3. Service Your Vehicle 
In hot dry climates, cars need special care. Frequent oil changes and belt checks are a must. Batteries die faster than everyone thinks they will. Make sure fluids are full.

4. Items You Should Have in Your Car 
Common sense says that you should always have a spare tire and a first aid kit. Here are some additional items that you might not think of if you aren't used to living in a hot climate.

Extra water, for drinking and/or for the car.
Steering wheel cover. A cloth cover (not leather) make allow you to comfortably handle the steering wheel after the vehicle has been standing in the sun. You can also use a small towel or handkerchief. If you don't have a windshield sunshade, place the small towel on a leather seat before you leave the car so you can get in and sit down when you return. If you've never had the experience of sitting on leather when you're wearing shorts, and that car has been outside in 120 degrees for a couple of hours....ouch!
Snacks, such as granola bars or small bags of crackers.
Cooler or insulated shopping bag. If you are shopping and you have a bit of time before you can get home, a cooler with an ice pack or insulated shopping bag will keep those frozen items from melting, or that fresh fish safe, before you get there.
Cell phone, so you can call if you get lost or get into trouble.
First aid kit. Items you should consider include ice packs, ace bandages, wrist brace, sunscreen, tweezers, x-acto blade, batteries, (girl stuff), and various meds like Benadryl or Motrin.
Emergency kit. Items you should consider include a flashlight, flares, jumper cables, blanket, extra clothes and gloves, paper towels, and some basic tools like wrenches, a ratchet and sockets, screwdrivers and pliers.

5. Items you Should Not Have in Your Car 
Think about it--does it make sense to buy a milk chocolate candy bar and leave it in your car in the heat? Believe me, no matter how smart we all think we are, at one time or another we've been dopey and left something we shouldn't have in the car. Hopefully, there wasn't a large cleaning bill as a result.

Milk and other dairy products.
Anything packaged under pressure, like hair spray or soda pop.
Tapes, CDs, or DVDs.
Sunscreen in a bottle. Buy little packets or towelettes.
Crayons, candy, gum, lipstick.
Credit cards or other cards with magnetic strips on plastic.
Cleaning solutions with alcohol or ammonia.
Anything that didn't have a decent smell before it reached 115 isn't going to smell any better after it's been left exposed in direct sunlight all day.
After shopping, check your trunk carefully to make sure nothing has fallen out of the grocery bags. You really don't want to find those eggs or that salami a week later.

Toyota Will Launch Electric Scion iQ Next Year

At its recent annual dealer conference in Las Vegas, Toyota announced that it will launch the Scion iQ electric car in 2012. The electric car will take on a slew of new electrified vehicles, including the Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi i, Chevrolet Volt, and Ford Focus Electric.

Toyota is already the dominant brand when it comes to hybrids, thanks to its Prius line. However, the addition of the Scion iQ will give its youth-oriented brand a much needed jump into the all-electric vehicle market.

Pricing and other details on the 2012 iQ have yet to be released, but pricing is expected to begin under $20,000. The car will have a very small footprint, similar to the Smart FourTwo. Its range is expected to be around 50 miles, making it most suitable for buyers in urban areas that rarely drive long distances.

Since the iQ will not have a very long range, Toyota’s upcoming Prius plug-in hybrid or RAV4 EV will likely be better suited for those that want to have a greater emissions-free driving range.

Toyota Prius Tops 2011 Hybrid Scorecard

The Toyota Prius is the top non-luxury hybrid in the 2011 Hybrid Scorecard compiled by the Union of Concerned Scientists. The Prius beat Honda’s Civic Hybrid and Insight for the coveted top spot to become the cleanest, most fuel-efficient vehicle available.

The organization praised the Toyota Prius for “delivering a more than 40 percent reduction in global warming pollution compared with its closest conventional models.”

“It’s not just the Toyota Prius and everyone else anymore,” said Don Anair, a senior UCS engineer and the scorecard’s author. “Automakers from Ford to Hyundai and Honda to Nissan are using hybrid technology to boost fuel economy and cut pollution without breaking the bank for consumers.”

Some hybrids on the list did not perform as well as the organization would have hoped. The Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid, for example, was criticized for “emitting less than 10 percent less” than the conventional gasoline-only version.

As for luxury hybrids, the new Lexus CT 200h captured a high environmental improvement score and the top combined MPG rating.

“Automakers are still producing hybrids that fail to deliver on the technology’s potential to dramatically improve fuel economy,” Anair said. “Their focus on maximizing power over consumer value risks the future of hybrid technology.”

As a result, today’s IIHS standards are so high that full-size crew-cab pickups like the Dodge Ram, Chevrolet Silverado, Nissan Titan and GMC Sierra didn’t make the cut in the latest round of IIHS testing—but the Toyota Tundra crew cab did.

Toyota Moves Up 14 Positions In Quality Study

Toyota received a combined four segment awards in the 2011 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study (IQS), which was just released this week. Toyota’s luxury arm, Lexus, was honored as the as the highest ranking nameplate in the industry, while the Toyota Division moved up 14 positions to place seventh.

This year’s study revealed that Toyotas had 16 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, enabling the brand to return to the top 10 among all nameplates. Models that improved their scores from last year’s study included the Corolla, Prius, Tacoma, Tundra, Venza, RAV4, and Sequoia.

Lexus continued to shine in the annual study, as the brand has ranked highest in the IQS study in 13 of the last 22 years. Lexus also captured four segment awards in this year’s study, more than any other premium brand. These awards include the Lexus ES 350 for Entry Premium car; the Lexus GS for Midsize Premium Car; the Lexus GX 460 for Midsize Premium Crossover/SUV; and the Lexus LS 460 for Large Premium Car.

“We are quite pleased with the quality improvements Toyota and Lexus have made over the last year and Lexus’ highest position overall in the 2011 IQS,” said Jim Lentz, TMS president and chief operating officer. Lentz continued, “We are committed to the quality and dependability of our products.”

Summer can be tough on cars, especially during high temperatures when heat can destroy batteries and stress the cooling system and tires. As a precaution, these vehicle components should be checked periodically during summer to help avoid breakdowns and car problems, according to the Car Care Council.

Excessive heat and overcharging shorten the life of a battery. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, which then damages the internal structure of the battery. A malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, allows too high a charging rate, which will eventually destroy a battery.

To get the most life out of a battery, the council recommends having the electrical system checked to make sure it is charging at the correct rate. If your car's battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it often, especially in hot weather and add distilled water if necessary. Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt can become a conductor, which drains battery power. If corrosion accumulates on battery terminals, it becomes an insulator and inhibits the current flow.

The cooling system also works harder during hot temperatures to prevent overheating of the engine. To keep the cooling system working effectively, the coolant and distilled water mixture for a vehicle's radiator should be 50:50. As a reminder, never open a hot radiator cap when checking the coolant level in the reservoir.

As a rule of thumb, the coolant should be changed annually on most vehicles. This will keep the cooling system fresh and clean inside, which helps prevent corrosion and assures that the coolant has the proper boiling point and protection. A pressure test, thermostat test, a cooling fan test and a visual inspection for leaks and corrosion should also be done annually. Hoses and drive belts should be checked for cracks, bulges or frayed edges.

The radiator should be kept clean by periodically using a garden hose and a soft brush to carefully remove bugs, dirt and debris.

Tires also need special care in warmer weather as high temperatures put added stress on them. To maximize tire life and safety, check the tire condition and inflation pressure monthly, and have the tires rotated every 6,000 miles. Summer heat will cause the pressure within a tire to rise, therefore, it's important to check the pressure when tires are cold. The owner's manual includes the recommended air pressure for your vehicle's tires.

"It takes very little time and money to make sure your car runs properly during summer, and although breakdowns happen, they can definitely be minimized by taking a few extra preventive maintenance steps," said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.

The council reminds motorists that the vehicle's exterior also can be damaged by sunlight, UV radiation, acid rain, salt, dirt and air pollution. To protect the paint and finish, vehicles should be washed weekly and waxed every six months.

Toyota Place Service Tips: Jiffy Lube changes 3,000-mile rule for oil changes

Motorists caught between quick-lube chains' and automakers' guidelines on when to get an oil change may finally catch a break.

The largest chain, Jiffy Lube, is ditching the long-held one-size-fits-all mantra that oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. Instead, it says, franchisees will combine customer information on driving habits and the recommendations from their car's owner's manual for types of driving, from light to "severe," to come up with a specific schedule for that customer.

The system, which uses a kiosk with a computer to access a database of manufacturer guidelines, has been in testing for several months.

"We're showing them on a screen (what) a manufacturer recommends," says Jiffy Lube CEO Stu Crum. He says 47% of the customers at participating locations opted for the severe-driving schedule, with plans to get oil changed an average of every 3,502 miles. "Customers are choosing oil-change schedules that indicate they will return regularly."

Regular oil changes are a key way to prolong the life of an engine, but automakers have lengthened recommended intervals in recent years to as many as 10,000 miles. "Oil-change intervals are determined by operating conditions and driver habits, not by miles driven — busting the 3,000-mile oil-change myth," says GM spokeswoman Pam Flores.

In a further blow to the quick-lube business, many vehicles now let drivers know electronically when it's time for an oil change.

Parts in modern engines fit more tightly, and gasoline quality is generally higher, prolonging oil life, says David Champion, auto editor for Consumer Reports. He says he suspects that as customers have visited less often, chains may be coming up with the consultation idea or coaching motorists toward the severe-driving schedule as "a way to drum up more business."

Some quick-lube operators argue, however, that if car owners haven't changed their oil for 5,000 miles or more, despite what a manual might say, they are asking for trouble. "We know what we see," says Pat Wirth, president of the 1,200-member Automotive Oil Change Association.

She says most people drive in city traffic and temperature extremes that should put them on the more-frequent severe-driving schedule. And she says dashboard warning lights can provide "a false sense of security," because they aren't necessarily accurate.

Toyota’s TAPESTRY Grant Program was established to recognize excellent and creativity in science education. Recently, Toyota announced a group of 50 U.S.-based educators that will receive $500,000 in grants from the program.

For more than 20 years, the Toyota TAPESTRY Grants for Science Teachers Program has strived to enhance science education for students. Even amid troubles facing the nation’s schools, the program continues to get students excited about science.

“It’s extremely rewarding to support exceptional teachers who bring quality science education to our children,” said Michael Rouse, vice president of philanthropy, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “The Toyota TAPESTRY program was built on the vision of recognizing such teachers and supporting their efforts to improve science learning opportunities for children. Toyota Announces America’s First Pipeline-Fed Hydrogen Fueling Station

Even though Toyota is currently the world leader in hybrid sales, with more than 1 million Toyota Prii sold in the U.S. alone, the company remains committed to exploring other new ways to motivate the automobile industry, including hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. And those efforts continued recently when Toyota helped open the country’s first hydrogen fueling station to be fed directly from an active industrial hydrogen pipeline.

The facility, developed through a collaboration between Toyota, Air Products, Shell Oil, California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is located near Toyota Motor Sales’ West Coast campus and will provide hydrogen for both Toyota’s fuel-cell demonstration program and that of other automakers operating in the Los Angeles area.

“This fueling station will be a tremendous model to show how effortless a pipeline supply of hydrogen can be to an automobile fueling station and other hydrogen fuel-cell applications,” said David J. Taylor, vice president, energy business at Air Products. “This site will be a model to learn and expand pipeline-fed stations as opportunities arise.”

The new hydrogen filling station also is just the latest component of Toyota’s campaign to bring this technology to the market. The automaker’s fuel-cell demonstration fleet has been on the road since 2002, traveling millions of miles and driving numerous Toyota breakthroughs. For example, while those first fuel-cell hybrids had a range of only 130 miles, the newest generation of vehicles can travel some 430 miles on a single tank of hydrogen.

“Building an extensive hydrogen re-fueling infrastructure is a critical step in the successful market launch of fuel-cell vehicles,” said Chris Hostetter, group vice president, product and strategic planning, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. “We plan to bring a fuel-cell vehicle to market in 2015, or sooner, and the infrastructure must be in place to support our customers’ needs.”

According to the video, plug-in vehicles of today are what cell phones were in 1987; new, and exciting, but unfortunately a long way from being accessible. The organization wants consumers to keep demanding plug-in vehicles, and the infrastructure to go along with them. Only then will plug-in vehicles make a dent in the market; and, more importantly, a dent in our world.

Toyota Place News: Toyota’s Japan Production Will Return To Normal this month.

Toyota’s automobile production in Japan will recover to 90 percent of pre-disaster levels next month, which is much faster than the automaker had initially projected. The automaker’s rapid recovery illustrates Toyota’s resilience and ability to bounce back from disaster.

The automaker made the announcement during a meeting with suppliers this week. The March 11 earthquake and tsunami damaged the plants of key parts suppliers in northeastern Japan, disrupting the automaker’s production lines.

Toyota had reported that production in Japan would return to about 70 percent over the next few months, with full production not being reached until later this year. Toyota also estimates that production delays cost the company production of 550,000 vehicles in Japan, and another 350,000 overseas.

In addition to Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Mazda, have all faced production problems. However, all Japanese automakers expect to reach pre-disaster production levels by the end of the year.

Toyota Place News: Toyota Ranked No. 1 In Supplier Relations

For the first time in three years, Toyota ranked No. 1 in supplier relations. That’s according to the annual Planning Perspectives‘ study, which ranks how auto manufactures treat their suppliers.

Although John Henke Jr., president of the Birmingham-based research firm, said that the Toyota’s acceleration problems probably prevented the automaker from scoring higher, Toyota still scored well above Honda, 327 to 309.

The study polls suppliers about factors such as trust, communication, what kind of help the six major U.S. and Asian manufacturers give to suppliers to cut costs and improve quality, late or excessive engineering changes and the sharing of savings from cost reduction proposals.

“Suppliers constantly say they provide the best people and the best support to those companies that are most trusting — just as you do more for friends you trust than those you don’t,” said Henke.

The Detroit Three made improvements in the latest index, but still have yet to catch up to Honda and Toyota. Chrysler was the most improved manufacturer, but still came last in the rankings.

Toyota Place tips: Car Care Maintenance 101.

Vehicle maintenance is one of the more bothersome aspects of automobile ownership. Maintenance also can be confusing: Which service interval should you follow, the "normal-duty" or "severe-duty" schedule?   Severe-duty applies to vehicles that operate under a variety of conditions. Frequent starting and stopping, excessive idling, or trips of less than five miles can lead to carbon buildup. Driving in the desert or off-road can cause the engine to ingest more airborne contaminants. Other intense scenarios include towing, operating in cold climates, and sustained high speed.

Because of the stresses involved, severe-duty schedules recommend a larger number of maintenance operations at shorter intervals. Maintenance schedules vary between manufacturers, so it's best to consult the owner's manual. Some carmakers now employ the onboard computer to calculate the maintenance interval based on the specific driver's modus operandi. Generally, the newer the vehicle, the simpler the service schedule. This is due to technological advances having reduced the number of mechanical parts that actually require maintenance.

If you own or lease a vehicle still covered by a manufacturer's warranty, you must perform the minimum recommended maintenance listed in the owner's manual or risk liability if a warrantable part fails. The manufacturer warrants the vehicle, or vehicle part, as long as it's properly serviced. Neglect the service, and you're responsible for any related failures. This can be a legal and legitimate reason for denying a warranty claim.
Review the recommended service intervals listed in the owner's manual. While those schedules may appear complicated, you'll likely see that just a few important services are repeated at various intervals.

After selling more than one million Prii in the U.S. over the past 11 years, Toyota is now preparing to launch a number of new models to broaden the hybrid’s appeal.

Yesterday, in celebration of the Prius’ sales milestone, Toyota began offering commemorative badges that owners can paste on their windows or bumpers. Available at ToyotaPriusProjects.com, these badges will be given to more than 10,000 visitors to the site.

The design on the badge will be unique to every car, and the design will be based on how many Prii an owner owns, how many miles they have driven, and on the car’s model year.

The Toyota Prius has far fewer emissions than many other vehicles because it burns less fuel to go the same distance. The design of the badge is intended to reflect that important fact. However, Toyota promises that no two badges will look alike.

Toyota’s fuel cell hybrid vehicle demonstration program has been supported this week by the opening of a new hydrogen refueling station. The station, located in Torrance California, is the first in the U.S. fed directly from an active industrial hydrogen pipeline.

The new Shell facility will provide hydrogen for the Toyota fuel cell hybrid demonstration program vehicles as well as other manufacturers’ fuel cell vehicle fleets in the Los Angeles area. The station is near by the sales and marketing headquarters for Toyota.

Toyota has awarded college scholarships as part of a nationwide safe driving program with Discovery Education. A total of ten high school students have received the awards after playing the interactive road challenge game, Heads Up!, which is designed to promote safe driving habits.

Winners of the scholarships will receive a $5,000 cash prize to be used for educational purposes at an accredited college or university. For Toyota, it was a fun, interactive way to promote safe driving among teen drivers.

“Toyota is dedicated to building awareness among teens about the dangers of distracted driving and encouraging responsible and safe driving habits,” said Patricia Salas Pineda, group vice president, national philanthropy and the Toyota USA Foundation. “With Discovery Education, we congratulate the winners of the Toyota Teen Driver Sweepstakes and all those who participated in the Heads Up! challenge for their commitment to safety.”

The game conditioned teens to avoid distractions like sending text messages, changing a radio station, or drinking a soda.

Toyota Place: Toyota To Develop Wireless Car-Charging Tech

Toyota has announced a new partnership with U.S. start-up WiTricity Corp. The partnership is aimed at building new technology for charging the batteries of electric vehicles without the need for plugs.

The two companies will build technology capable of charging EVs and plug-in hybrids through an embedded charging system in the floor of a garage and a receiver mounted on the underside of the vehicle.

Toyota believes that a wireless charging system will make the process of “fueling” an EV less cumbersome. By making it easier for owners, Toyota believes this technology will ultimately spur wider use of EVs and plug-in hybrids.

According to Delphi, which is affiliated with WiTricity, wireless charging technology will be capable of recharging a vehicle at a rate comparable to most home-based chargers — between two to eight hours depending on the vehicle’s battery size.

Toyota on Monday said it has started measuring the radiation levels of its vehicles bound for export in order to "provide customer peace of mind" in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor disaster.

"Toyota Motor Corporation — for the safety and peace of mind of its customers and other concerned parties — has started measuring the radiation levels of its export vehicles, parts for overseas assembly and service parts," said Toyota in a statement. "As a result, it has found that such radiation levels are no different than that of the surrounding air, meaning there is no danger to human health."

The announcement was made in tandem with the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), which announced it "has initiated its own procedures to test the radiation levels of vehicles produced in Japan." JAMA said it has "enlisted the expertise of an external authority specializing in the field." JAMA said the new tests "are conducted directly on various designated areas of the surface of vehicles." Thus far, the "results fall within the range designated by the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan as being unthreatening to human health," said JAMA in a statement signed by its chairman, Toshiyuki Shiga, on Monday.

"JAMA is entirely confident that the motor vehicles now being manufactured by its member automakers in Japan present no cause for concern to consumers, whether overseas or in Japan," it said.

The new steps to reassure consumers come six days after Japan's nuclear watchdog agency described the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power reactor as a "major accident" with "wider consequences" and likened it to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. It is the second time Japanese automakers have taken steps to reassure nervous consumers about radiation levels since the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear reactor disaster.

On April 12, the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan raised the severity rating of the country's nuclear crisis to the highest level — equal only to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations' atomic watchdog, on Monday said the situation at the Fukushima facility "remains very serious although there are early signs of recovery in some functions," according to its daily log.

Toyota beat out 12,000 ENERGY STAR organizations to receive the 2011 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is Toyota’s seventh consecutive for their continued leadership in protecting the environment through energy efficiency and management. Toyota has also partnered with the EPA in order to continue improving their environmental work in all of their manufacturing facilities across the country.

By reducing total manufacturing energy usage by 13% per vehicle and total water usage by 18% per vehicle, Toyota manufacturing plants have collectively saved more than $20 million per year and have reduced emissions by 150,000 metric tons (equivalent to the usage of 19,000 homes). The company has been able to make these improvements at low to no cost while expanding and adding new facilities. Due to continued improvements like these, the EPA has scored Toyota’s energy performance in their manufacturing plants in the top 25 percent of the industry.

Toyota’s production and engineering general manager Robin Haugen said, “Our objective is to manufacture vehicles in harmony with the environment which takes a great level of responsibility and commitment. It is thanks to our team members’ daily efforts that we are able to reduce our carbon footprint with every vehicle that rolls off our manufacturing lines year after year.”

It is this level of commitment that impressed the EPA, Elizabeth Craig (director of the EPA’s Office of Atmospheric Programs) said, “Toyota’s long term leadership and commitment to energy efficiency demonstrates the types of accomplishments that we can all achieve in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting our global environment. We look forward to their continued partnership and leadership.”

And how about for women? Women bought another German, the Volkswagen New Beetle, in six out of 10 cases. No wonder that the new version of the Beetle, being unveiled in two weeks, was teased on Oprah Winfrey's daily TV estrogen fest.

TrueCar.com, which decided which cars are most popular by gender, reaches the broad conclusion that "the study shows that women car buyers are more cost-conscious and purchased fuel-efficient vehicles while male buyers were completely the opposite, purchasing vehicles that were either big and brawny, like a large truck, or chose a high-priced, high-performance vehicle," said Jesse Toprak, a TrueCar vice president.

As far as brands go, women preferred:

They liked the Mini in the greatest numbers, followed by Kia, and Honda. The top brands for men were Ferrari, Lotus, Lamborghini, Maybach and Rolls Royce.

As for individual models, the top picks for women were the Volkswagen New Beetle, Kia Spectra, Nissan Rogue, Volkswagen Eos, Hyundai Entourage, Volvo S40, Jeep Compass, Honda CR-V, Nissan Sentra, and Hyundai Tucson. Here are some tips to help you reduce the amount of gas you use. If you are already following these tips, you are probably getting the best gas mileage your car can deliver.

Drive Sensibly
Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money.

Observe the Speed Limit
While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph.

You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.24 per gallon for gas.

Observing the speed limit is also safer.

Remove Excess Weight
Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2 percent. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle's weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.

Avoid Excessive Idling
Idling gets 0 miles per gallon. Cars with larger engines typically waste more gas at idle than do cars with smaller engines.

Use Cruise Control
Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas.

Use Overdrive Gears
When you use overdrive gearing, your car's engine speed goes down. This saves gas and reduces engine wear.

Keep Your Engine Properly Tuned
Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent, though results vary based on the kind of repair and how well it is done.

Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.

Keep Tires Properly Inflated
You can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.

The proper tire pressure for your vehicle is usually found on a sticker in the driver's side door jamb or the glove box and in your owner's manual. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire's sidewall.

Use the Recommended Grade of Motor Oil
You can improve your gas mileage by 1–2 percent by using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can lower your gas mileage by 1–2 percent. Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1–1.5 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says "Energy Conserving" on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

Toyota Place: Toyota To Launch U.S. Safety Research Center

“Our investment will support collaborative research aiming to reduce driver distraction and increase the safety of vehicles, drivers, passengers and pedestrians.”

As a mark of that collaboration, Toyota also has announced it would commit $50 million to the effort during the next five years and named its three charter partners in the CSRC:

The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute will lead a multidisciplinary project to assess the possible benefits of advanced safety systems by leveraging its expertise in driver behavior, crash analysis and driver modeling.

Virginia Tech will be collaborating with Toyota on research into the effectiveness of an electronic coaching and monitoring system for newly licensed teenage drivers to help reduce unsafe driving behaviors.

With The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute, Toyota is partnering in a pilot study to develop the country’s first publicly available national crash surveillance system focused on child vehicle occupants.

“Toyota has always tried to take a comprehensive approach to creating a safe, sustainable automotive society through advanced vehicle safety technology, intelligent transport systems and traffic safety education,” said Chuck Gulash, who will head up the CSRC for Toyota. “We have a long history of working closely with North American partners to achieve our safety objectives, and our new collaborative research initiative will build on this tradition. We intend to publish as much of the research as possible so that it is available to federal agencies, the industry and academia.”

Toyota Place: Gas prices revive car buyers' interest in hybrids.

As gas prices hit an average $3.51 a gallon nationwide on Monday, automakers and dealers are starting to see an uptick in sales of their most-fuel-efficient vehicles, including hybrids and electrics.

Toyota's Prius, which has a commanding lead in market share among hybrids, saw a 69.9% sales increase in February compared with February last year, Autodata reported.

Dealers say they believe customers are starting to take notice of gas prices in making their buying decisions, though numbers still are small.

"It's just starting," says Adam Lee, chairman of 20-dealership Lee Auto Malls in Maine. "We are not seeing a dramatic increase in sales (of hybrids and small cars), but we will."

The number of potential car buyers researching hybrids at the Edmunds.com information site nearly doubled to 400,000 from November to the end of January, in tandem with the gas price run-up.

"We've had kind of a slow, steady increase in prices" that has helped automakers prepare, says Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds.com senior analyst.

Four out of five consumers in a Kelley Blue Book survey say that gas prices are influencing vehicle choices, up 11 percentage points from January.

Automakers say they are far more ready with fuel-efficient traditional cars, in addition to alternative-power vehicles, to handle soaring gas prices than they were in 2008, when average prices peaked at $4.11 a gallon.

"We are fairly well positioned for it," says Al Castignetti, vice president for Nissan in the U.S. With small cars, plus a bevy of new, smaller crossovers, "I have such a broad array of product offerings."

Ford Motor points to now having four models that get more than 40 miles per gallon.

Demand for four-cylinder engines has risen dramatically, says General Motors spokesman Tom Henderson, and GM is selling every one of the Volt extended-range electric cars that it can produce.

For now, most automakers aren't making big changes at factories to shift to more small or hybrid cars or making big ad buys to tout them. Says Honda spokesman Kurt Antonius, "People already perceive Honda's cars and trucks as fuel efficient, so we don't need to develop a special ad campaign during these challenging times at the pump."

Most car buyers won't make dramatic changes until gas prices pass $4 a gallon nationally, predicts Mike Jackson, CEO of AutoNation, the country's largest new car dealership chain.

It’s a match made in heaven: On the one hand, “Consumers have grown accustomed to having the world at their fingertips through their mobile phones,” according to Jon Bucci, vice president of the Advanced Technology Department at Toyota. And on the other, those buyers also have grown accustomed to Toyota meeting all their transportation needs. Now the automaker is putting both those expectations together with the Toyota Entune multimedia system, recently introduced at this year’s International CES consumer electronics show.

“And unlike other industry solutions, Entune allows the driver to interact with informative and entertaining mobile content without fumbling with their phone,” added Bucci. “We offer features that our customers demand and integrate them seamlessly in the vehicle.”

Among those features will be:

      • Mobile Apps—Entune will launch offering the Bing search engine to help drivers find more than 16 million points of interest, with destinations sent directly to the vehicle’s navigation system; OpenTable, capable of making reservations at any one of 15,000 restaurants across the country; MovieTickets.com, providing access to film tickets and reviews; and the ability to get customized, real-world information about traffic, fuel prices, weather, stocks and sports.
     • Music—Tuning into Entune will deliver more than 750 local radio stations via iheartradio, access to the Pandora music-streaming service, XM satellite radio, HD radio and USB connectivity for personal media players.
     • Voice Recognition—Entune’s best-in-class voice-recognition system is able to respond to conversational speech commands, so there’s no need to worry about memorizing thousands of specific voice directions to operate the system.

In addition, Entune can be upgraded wirelessly, so it always packs the latest applications and functionality, and it was designed to be compatible with a wide range of current cell phones.

Toyota Place: Toyota to equip Prius minivan hybrid for Japan with lithium-ion battery

The Prius minivan hybrid due later this year will be the first standard hybrid from Toyota Motor Corp. equipped with a lithium-ion battery.

But the advanced, lightweight power pack will appear only in the Japanese version of the car, a person familiar with the plan said Friday. The U.S. version will stick with the heavier nickel-metal hydride batteries used in the current Prius hatchback and Toyota's other gasoline-electric vehicles.

Toyota is using lithium in the Japan-spec Prius minivan to open up more interior room and allow for three rows of seats, as preferred by Japanese customers, the source said. The Prius V minivan shown at this year's Detroit auto show had only two rows of seats, while the Prius + variant shown this week in Geneva has three rows.

Using a bulkier nickel-metal battery requires the battery to consume space in a console between the driver's and passenger's seat.

"We are doing it only for cabin configuration considerations," the source said.

Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco said the company couldn't comment on future product plans.

Japan's Nikkei business daily reported separately that the minivan version of the Prius would go on sale in Japan next month and start at 3 million yen ($36,590), when equipped with a lithium ion battery. A lower-grade version with a nickel-metal hydride battery will also be offered, starting at 2.35 million yen ($28,660).

Toyota has long said it will reserve lithium batteries for plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, while it continues to use nickel-metal batteries in traditional hybrids. But an executive said last month that the first standard hybrid with a lithium power pack would arrive soon.

Toyota Place: 'Consumer Reports' Announces its Top Picks for Cars in 2011

Consumer Reports announced its annual Top Picks for cars Monday, which lists the best models in 10 distinct categories as chosen by the magazine.

Three of the top choices for 2011 include models from Toyota:

Small SUV: Toyota RAV4
Green Car: Toyota Prius
Family Hauler: Toyota Sienna

Meanwhile, for an eigth consecutive year, the Toyota Prius was chosen as the top "Green Car" for getting the best fuel economy -- 44 mpg overall -- of any car tested by Consumer Reports.

The magazine selects its Top Picks after running dozens of tests on each individual vehicle to evaluate its braking, handling, comfort, convenience, safety, and fuel economy, among other things.

Toyota Place: Toyota Adding U.S. Transmission Capacity.

Toyota announced today it will add 6-speed automatic transmission capacity at its plant in Buffalo. The $64 million investment will create approximately 40 new jobs in West Virginia.

Toyota made the announcement with Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller, U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito, Toyota management and team members in attendance.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia, Inc. (TMMWV) currently builds 6-speed transmissions for V6 engine models including the Avalon, Camry, Lexus RX350, Sienna and Venza.

The expansion will bring TMMWV’s annual transmission capacity to nearly 400,000. The expansion raises total employment to approximately 1,100 and total plant investment to $1.26 billion.

Similarly, Bodine Aluminum facilities in Jackson, Tenn. and Troy, Mo. will also add capacity to support TMMWV. Start of production at all three facilities is projected by the end of 2012.

The two Bodine Aluminum plants will provide transmission cases and housing parts to the West Virginia plant. The expansion will increase Bodine’s capacity by more than 320,000 units annually representing approximately 20 new jobs and an $8.4 million investment.

Toyota Place: Average car loan rate of 6.21% lowest in decades!

Interest rates on auto loans are hitting record lows, a boon to car buyers and a benefit to the nation's recovering auto industry.

The interest rate on a four-year loan for a new car averaged 6.21% in the latest weekly survey of major banks and thrifts, according to Bankrate.com. That's the lowest average rate in more than two decades of tracking. A few lenders are offering rates as low as 2.99%, says Greg McBride, senior financial analyst for Bankrate.com.

Edmunds.com says interest rates on new car purchases overall in December, including automaker-subsidized loans, averaged 4.16%, the lowest since the car-buying research site started keeping track of rates in January 2002.

Rates were a half-percentage point lower than in December 2009. Edmunds recorded the highest average new car loan rate at 8% in January 2006, when sales demand was higher and credit-rating standards looser.

Leading to low rates:

Lender competition. Some of the lowest rates are coming from large national or regional banks, which McBride says is unusual. Now that the dust is settling from the banking crisis, "There is certainly a market-share grab taking place," McBride says.

"What's really driving our market right now are these low interest rates," says Pete Greiner "The national lenders became very competitive."

Auto sales push. Growing but still comparatively weak sales are leading automakers to offer more 0% and other subsidized interest rates to sell cars.

Focus on lower-risk borrowers. Lenders typically offer their lowest rates to lowest-risk borrowers. Fewer loans are being made to higher-risk customers. So well-heeled luxury-car buyers landed the lowest rates in December, Edmunds.com says. "If you have a credit score that's decent, you can definitely take advantage of it now," says Edmunds.com analyst Ivan Drury. Although automakers typically offer great deals at year's end to boost sales, some of the better deals still exist, he says.

Not only are customers benefiting from the low rates, but the value of their trade-in is up. Both factors lead to higher car sales, says Paul Taylor, chief economist for the National Automobile Dealers Association.

Some buyers take advantage of lower rates to buy larger or fancier vehicles. Others just pocket the savings, says Tim Smith, "It goes both ways," he says.

Already the top-selling compact car in America, the Toyota Corolla has been refreshed for the 2011 model year and looks ready to defend its crown against the best the competition has to offer.

To help achieve that goal, Toyota designers provided the Corolla with an enhanced interior and nuanced exterior makeover that includes upgrades to the car’s front bumper, radiator grille, front lower grille, headlamps, trunk lid, rear combination lamp and rear bumper. The changes add another level of sportiness to the Corolla’s athletic appearance, which is further emphasized by a new 16-inch wheel design for the Corolla S. At the same time, much attention to detail was spent in tailoring the Corolla’s exterior for reduced wind noise. Windshield moldings, wiper-blade covers and more have all been fine-tuned for a quieter cabin. And that comprehensive approach to improving the entire ownership experience is on display throughout the 2011 Corolla.

For example, the Corolla also boasts a perky and responsive 1.8-liter I4 engine with dual variable valve timing and other cutting-edge technology for both competitive power ratings—132 hp and 128 lb.-ft. of torque—and strong EPA numbers. The Corolla can achieve EPA ratings of up 28 mpg city and 35 mpg highway with a five-speed manual transmission or 26 mpg city/34 mpg highway when relying on its four-speed automatic. In addition, that autobox also features standard manual-shifting functionality for added driver control.

Toyota’s approach to safety is worth noting as well. The Corolla boasts the automaker’s Star Safety System as standard content, leveraging protective technologies like vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking, brake-force distribution, brake assist and the Smart Stop system. This feature, standard on all Toyotas, automatically reduces engine power under certain conditions when both the brake and the gas pedal are pressed at the same time. Further evidence of Toyota’s commitment to vehicle quality can be seen in the company’s move to add complimentary maintenance service to the 2011 Corolla—and its entire lineup.

Covered is all normal factory-recommended maintenance, such as oil and filter changes, tire rotations, lubrication of key chassis components, a 19-point inspection, and 24-hour roadside assistance for lockouts, flat tires, tows, jump starts and other important services.

In other words, the 2011 Toyota Corolla is certain to remain a big seller in the compact car segment after it debuts at local dealerships this December.

Toyota Place Gives January Shoppers Discounted Lease or Auto Loan Rate Options

Toyota is offering 0 percent auto loan rates on most vehicles in January, as well as discounted auto leases and complimentary maintenance.

For 36 months, the Avalon, Venza, RAV4 and Highlander are 0 percent. Zero percent car loans for up to 60 months are good on the Prius, Yaris, Corolla, Camry , Camry Hybrid, Matrix, Highlander Hybrid and Tundra in January. Keep in mind that you'll need a minimum credit score of about 720 to receive Toyota's 0 percent auto loan rate.

The 2010 Toyota Yaris still has a $1,000 cash back incentive in January.

The new 2011 Toyota Highlander can be leased for $279 a month in January.

Toyota is offering shoppers 39-month lease deals on most of its vehicles in January. The lease incentives are good on 13 different models. Monthly lease payments range from $169 to $469, depending on the model, and you'll need anywhere from $2,168 to $3,544 at lease signing.

In January, the 2010 Corolla LE and 2011 Camry LE have a sign and drive lease deal with $0 due at signing. The Corolla is $199 a month while the Camry is $249.

Toyota's two-year complimentary maintenance program comes standard on all new Toyota and Scion vehicles. You'll get a coupon book for all scheduled maintenance, which includes things like oil changes and tire rotations, but doesn't cover things like brake pads and wiper blades.

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the Prius family of vehicles today at the 2011 North American International Auto Show. In addition to the current third-generation Prius and Prius Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (PHV), the new Prius v midsize hybrid-electric vehicle and the Prius c Concept vehicle joined the iconic hybrid brand, broadening the appeal of Prius to all ages and lifestyles.

With the expansion of the Prius family, a new evolution of vehicles will further increase the acceptance of hybrids with Prius’ same core values of high fuel economy, low emissions, proven technology and environmental stewardship.

“This is no ordinary family. It’s a modern family with a Prius for everyone,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. “The Prius v is an all-new dedicated hybrid vehicle, and all future Prius family members will be as well. They will all share common Prius attributes but will be unique, with a special appeal to different buyers.”

The Prius midsize liftback has accounted for more than 955,000 sales in the U.S. since it was introduced in 2000. The third-generation Prius, which reached dealerships in June 2009, has continued the hybrid’s heritage of exceptional fuel economy and low emissions, while becoming the third-best selling Toyota passenger car in the U.S.

The Prius has also been a technological flagship vehicle, offering new features to the Toyota brand like Touch Tracer Display, Solar Powered ventilation, Smart Key System with Push Button Start, Lane Keep Assist, an Advanced Parking Guidance System and LED headlamps.

Prius v: “Versatility” for Young, Active Families
The new Prius v, with “v” expressing the vehicle’s versatility, will meet the needs of growing families with active lifestyles while providing the same attributes traditionally found in the Prius DNA. It will share the current generation Prius’ platform and Hybrid Synergy Drive technology. Featuring a compact exterior yet spacious interior, the Prius v will feature over 50-percent more interior cargo space than the current Prius.

With a balance between outstanding spaciousness, refined style, and smooth aerodynamics, Prius v has a low 0.29 coefficient of drag, which does not inhibit the vehicle’s convenient packaging. It is a new vehicle designed from the ground up, with a shape that evolved from Prius rather than being an elongated version.

The exterior styling is sleek, rounded and bold, with an extended roofline that allows the vehicle to retain the triangular silhouette symbolic of Prius. The trapezoidal-shaped front features sharp-edged headlamps, wind-slipping aero corners for improved aerodynamics and an enlarged under grille, which all help create a unique design evolving from the current Prius. Prius v’s rear styling is highlighted by a refined backdoor panel, intricate combination taillights and a specially designed roof spoiler that improves air flow.

Inside, the Prius v emphasizes overall proportion with spaciousness and flexibility for active families. Comfortable interior space and good visibility has been assisted by a high seating position, ample head room, and an impressive 38-inch couple distance, providing generous rear legroom. A low, wide-opening rear hatch reveals 34.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, making it the most spacious dedicated hybrid vehicle on the market and better than some compact SUVs.

Comfortable seating for five is specifically designed for young families. Sliding second row seats allow for easier ingress and egress and rear-storage flexibility, with a 45-degree recline for greater comfort. The 60/40 split, folding rear seats present four different seat arrangements that provide excellent usability for passengers and luggage, while a fold-flat front-passenger seat allows for extremely long cargo.

Also available, and a Toyota-first, is a resin Panoramic View moonroof with power retractable sun shades that provides an open atmosphere in the cabin with a 40-percent reduction in weight as compared to conventional glass roofs of the same size, and excellent heat insulation performance.

Up front, instrument-panel controls, including a single-dial air-conditioning control and a center-mounted digital combination meter, provide an advanced look and user-friendly command. The driving controls – including the Push Button Start, parking switch, electronic shift lever, and driving mode selection – are distinguished by silver trim.

Despite the spaciousness of a family friendly midsize vehicle, the Prius v will deliver estimated EPA fuel economy ratings of 42 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 40 mpg combined, the best fuel economy ratings of any SUV, crossover, or wagon on the market. It will also emit 66-percent fewer smog-forming emissions than the average new vehicle.

Like the current generation Prius, the Prius v is a showcase of technology that will include many of the same standard features. Four driving modes (Normal, Power, Eco and EV) satisfy a variety of road conditions and driver preferences. A Smart Key System with Push Button Start, an electronic shift lever, Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), and a back-up camera are standard. Available options include energy-efficient LED headlamps, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with a Pre-Collision System (PCS), and Advanced Parking Guidance System.

For a high level of safety, there are seven airbags, a high-strength cabin and an energy-absorbing body structure with impact beams, cross members and leg absorption pads. New driver and front-passenger seat design helps lessen possible whiplash injury during a collision.

Like all Toyota models, the Prius v will feature Toyota’s Star Safety System™ standard, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. It also features the standard Smart Stop Technology brake-override system.

Prius v will be one of the first Toyotas with the Entune™ multimedia system. For the first time ever in an automobile, this innovative new system leverages the mobile phone to provide a richer in-vehicle experience with fully integrated and wireless upgradeable navigation, entertainment and information services.

Toyota Entune debuts the first-ever support for engaging mobile apps, such as Bing, OpenTable, and movietickets.com, along with accessing useful travel-related services, such as live weather, traffic, fuel information (location and price), stocks, news and sports.

Toyota Entune brings the largest selection of music options available to a vehicle, including iheartradio’s 750+ stations, Pandora’s personalized music, the driver’s personal songs from portable media players and iPods (via USB or Bluetooth audio streaming), and more than 170 stations from XM satellite radio.

Prius v will combine Entune with a standard Display Audio system rich with dynamic entertainment and communication features. The system will include HD Radio with iTunes tagging for future purchase; XM radio, weather, sports, stocks and local fuel pricing; Bluetooth hands-free phone and wireless audio; and full iPod integration including music and video.

Prius c Concept: Small “city”-centric Hybrid Vehicle
While the current Prius has ushered hybrid technology into the mainstream, and the Prius v will provide the additional room and versatility for active families, compact shoppers are interested in a smaller hybrid at an entry price point and with superior fuel economy. The Prius c Concept, with c representing a “city”-centric vehicle, will appeal to young singles and couples who want an eco-sensitive, high-mileage, fun-to-drive Prius.

This dynamic vehicle with urban appeal will pursue outstanding fuel efficiency in a compact package, while also providing a surprisingly spacious interior. It will include many advanced technology features, including some offered on the current Prius.

Prius c Concept is the inspiration for an additional Prius family member that will come to market in the first half of 2012 as the most value-oriented hybrid in the U.S. market with the highest mileage of any “cordless” hybrid.

Prius Plug-In Vehicle: the Best of Both Worlds
Since its initial launch 10 years ago, one of the Prius’ main efficiencies has been a hybrid system with its own on-board recharging system that never needed to be plugged in to take people where they wanted to go. With the addition of new technology and shifts in the market, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid is the family member that represents the best of both worlds – the superior fuel economy of the Prius with added EV driving capability.

Depending on driving conditions, Prius Plug-in can be driven approximately 13 miles on battery power at speeds up to 60 mph. Its compact Lithium-ion battery provides less weight and a quicker recharging time, taking three hours on 110 volts and 1.7 hours on 220 volts. It can be “topped off” anytime with a convenient short charge.

After the EV power is depleted, the Plug-in performs like an economical third-generation Prius, the most fuel efficient midsize hybrid vehicle in America. Unlike pure EVs, it will be a seamless transition for consumers, with the only difference from a regular Prius is that it can be plugged in at convenient intervals.

Currently, more than 150 Lithium-ion-battery powered Prius Plug-ins are part of a demonstration program in several U.S. cities. The program’s goal is to demonstrate plug-in technology, educate and inform the public, evaluate performance, and better understand the benefits to future customers. This will help pave the way for an on-sale target in the first half of 2012.

The Plug-in will be initially offered in 14 West and East Coast states (Arizona, California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Virginia and New Hampshire) where nearly 60 percent of all Prius models are currently sold. Availability in all remaining states will be a year later.

When it comes to market, the Prius Plug-in will represent the most eco-sensitive and advanced choice within the Prius brand of products.

A lot has changed in the 10 years since the Toyota Prius went on sale in the U.S., but here’s something that remains the same: For the 2011 model year, the Prius still leads the list of the “Top Ten EPA-Rated Fuel Sippers.”

The Prius first came to the U.S. for the 2001 model year and made an instant impact, thanks to its ability to achieve EPA ratings of 42 mpg city/41 mpg highway/41 mpg combined. But while those numbers are plenty impressive—and would top the EPA’s list even today—the 2011 model has upped the ante to an amazing 51 mpg city/48 mpg highway/50 mpg combined. That’s gives the Toyota an advantage of 10 mpg city/12 mpg highway/11 mpg combined over its next closest competitor in the EPA rankings.

Perhaps even more amazing is that while the Prius has steadily increased its fuel efficiency from generation to generation, it’s also gotten more powerful. The much-lauded previous edition of the Prius relied on 110 combined horsepower from Toyota’s innovative Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, and the 2011 Prius now makes use of 134 hp.

Toyota achieves these kinds of results through its dedication to continuously improving the Prius with the latest advanced technology from around the world. This includes an available sliding-glass moonroof that is packaged with solar panels located over the rear seating area of the 2011 Prius. The panels power a new ventilation system that helps reduce the temperature inside the car when it’s parked in direct sunlight, also reducing the amount of time the air conditioning needs to be run for driver comfort.

And the rest of the Prius package is pretty darned efficient too. As just one example, consider that even though the car is smaller than a compact Honda Civic on the outside, it’s so big on the interior that the EPA rates the Prius as a mid-size vehicle, with room for five occupants.

All this for a base price that starts at just $22,800? It’s no wonder Toyota has sold more than 900,000 Prius models—and counting—in America since it first debuted.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) today announced that eight Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles were among 66 winners of Top Safety Pick awards for 2011.

Responding to the announcement, Toyota said it “is pleased to have received eight IIHS Top Safety Picks for 2011, which we believe is reflective of our ongoing commitment to developing safe and reliable vehicles for our customers.”

The eight winners are: Toyota Avalon, Corolla, Highlander, Sienna and Venza; Lexus RX, and Scion tC and xB. Only two automakers had more winners: Hyundai/Kia and Volkswagen/Audi each had nine. Sienna was the only minivan to make the list.

Top Safety Pick awards recognize vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover and rear crashes based on good ratings in IIHS tests. Foundation for California Community Colleges announces launch of Vehicle Repair, Retirement and Replacement for Motorists program

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – February 16, 2010 – The Foundation for California Community Colleges announced it has received up to $20 million in grant funding to launch a statewide program that will aim to improve California’s air quality. The program—called the Vehicle Repair, Retirement and Replacement for Motorists program or "VRRRM"—will bring clean air and fuel efficiency benefits to California consumers by repairing, retiring or replacing 17,000 polluting cars in California and removing more than 850 tons of pollutants from California’s airways over the next three years.

"This is a significant step forward for California’s air quality," said Paul Lanning, Ed.D., President and CEO of the Foundation for California Community Colleges. "This program represents a collaboration of multiple agencies involved in California’s air quality management. It will infuse much-needed funds back into the state's economy while tapping into the educational and training resources of the California Community Colleges, the largest system of higher education in the world."

Through 2013, VRRRM (pronounced “vroom”) will provide monetary incentives for motorists to repair, retire or replace their high-emitting vehicles, thereby removing them from California roadways and reducing overall vehicle emissions. VRRRM will supplement already-existing programs in an effort to add momentum to the fight for clean air while increasing the number of California motorists who will be eligible for such benefits. Additionally, it will tap into the workforce training provided by California Community Colleges by involving student assistants at more than 30 different college sites. College students will also aid with outreach to local communities through weekend events held on campuses.

While there are other repair, retirement and replacement programs already in place throughout California that are making progress toward improving California's air quality, VRRRM is intended to help close the gaps and make vehicle emission reduction benefits open to all motorists, particularly those disqualified from existing programs. The Foundation collaborated with several agencies in developing the VRRRM program including the California Bureau of Automotive Repair, California Air Resources Board, South Coast Air Quality Management District and the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.

Although motorists throughout the state will benefit from this program, VRRRM will place special emphasis in the Los Angeles and surrounding areas, known as the South Coast Basin, and portions of Central California, known as the San Joaquin Basin. Air quality measurements reveal that these air basins are plagued by the most severe air quality attainment issues in the state and nation. They are the only two air districts in California that have failed to attain federal air quality standards. What's more, nearly half of all California vehicles are registered and operate within these two basins.

Approximately 10 percent of the light-and medium- duty vehicles are responsible for close to 50 percent of the vehicle emissions according to remote sensing studies conducted in the South Coast Air Basin and in other urbanized areas of the country, and it has been found that providing monetary incentives can provide a necessary and cost-effective enticement for retiring many older, higher-emitting vehicles.

The VRRRM program is made possible by a grant from the Reformulated Gasoline Settlement Fund. Created as a result of an antitrust class action, the purpose of the fund is to achieve a clean air or fuel efficiency benefit for California consumers.

The Foundation for California Community Colleges was selected to administer the program due to the organization's statewide reach, and for its involvement in existing air quality programs. Currently, the Foundation works closely with the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Automotive Repair to provide air quality testing and support through its statewide network of BAR Smog Check Referee Stations. Through this program, 33 Smog Check Referee Centers located at California Community Colleges located throughout the state perform a variety of smog check services, and are staffed by Foundation Smog Check Referees and community college student technicians.

TheVRRRM (Vehicle Repair, Retirement, and Replacement for Motorists) is bringing clean air and fuel efficiency benefits to Californians by reducing the number of high-polluting vehicles on our roadways. Consumers Consumers are eligible to participate in VRRRM upon successful completion of the application process. All interested parties should consult the eligibility requirements for qualification guidelines and then submit an application to the VRRRM vehicle repair or vehicle replacement program.
Gold Shield Stations
A projected 15,000 vehicles will be eligible for repairs at participating Gold Shield Stations. VRRRM will reimburse these stations Stations an average of $500 per vehicle for approved repairs. Related inspection and diagnostic costs will also be reimbursed for qualified motorists.
Automotive Dealerships
VRRRM is projected to replace approximately 1,000 qualifying vehicles with lower emission vehicles in the South Coast Air District and San Joaquin Valley Air District by offering eligible consumers a $3,500 replacement incentive. Learn more >
